Gilbert Leroy Freeman, age 80, of Deford, passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at his home.
He was born February 25, 1931 and reaching 80 became the strength he needed to overcome the obstacles presented to him in the last 5 years of his life. Gil managed with dignity to maintain his life to celebrate his 80th birthday on Saturday, February 26th with his family and hospice nurse. This was a very happy occasion for all. Gil had a very good day and many left with seeing a smile and a laugh from Gil, along with a hug and a thank-you. Gil grew up and lived his whole life in the Deford area. On March 19, 1952 he was united in marriage to Ruth Phillips. Gilbert served in the U S Army from 1952 to 1954, serving in Germany. He retired from the Cass City School system in 1989 having worked as a custodian and bus driver at the Deford School. Gilbert loved spending time fishing, hunting and talking with friends.
Gilbert is survived by his wife, Ruth and children, Terri (Kenneth) Graichen of Deford, Debra Parker and companion Irv Thume of Deford, Rebecca (Sam) Spencer of Deford, Penny (Mishel) Ashtary of Fort Wayne, IN, Holly (John) Binder of Caro and Gilbert H.
